Where the name smash cake got its name
.Smash cakes get their name as a birthday cake that babies are given to smash with their hands, fists, and sometimes feet, as part of the celebration for their first birthday party. Due to how messy this can get, smash cake photo sessions are now commonly being done separately from a baby’s first birthday party in order to capture the cuteness and contain the clean up!
Can I do a smash cake photoshoot for my little one who is older than 1?
.YES! Fun fact. I do smash cake for my kids every year from 1yr to 3 yrs. Being a family that doesn’t eat much cake other than birthdays I love capturing their reaction each year. I also love seeing how different they not only take to the cake each year, but having a photo of them to compare their growth every year.
When should I schedule my smash cake photoshoot?
I suggest having your smash cake photoshoot at least 3 weeks before your little one's birthday celebration. That gives me enough time to edit the photos, as well as giving you enough time to order them to display for the birthday. If you are hoping to use the photos as your baby's invitation for the party I would suggest doing them 2 months prior to the party.
My baby’s birthday just passed and we tried to do our own photoshoot for the smash cake session at the party, but it didn’t turn out like I was hoping, HELP!
No matter what the reason is that you aren’t happy with your little one's first smash cake session it is okay. There is always time to re-due the photos. If you have your theme decorations from the party and want to use them we can set up the perfect background for your baby and get the same cake and do it again. OR we can pick out a completely new design and cake. Whatever you want to do we can make it work. This is your baby and your special memories, I am just here to help you capture them.
Where do I even get my smash cake from?
There are many options for where to buy a cake from. Because you should order it you should ask yourself a few questions. Do you want to make it homemade therefore to control the ingredients completely as well as the amount of frosting your little one gets? What is your budget for the cake? We really don’t like cake/sugar/gluten… do we HAVE TO smash cake?
No matter what the reason is that you don’t want to have a cake for the smash cake for the photoshoot it is perfectly fine! We don’t need to smash cake. We can smash almost anything, spaghetti, ice cream, donuts, sloppy joes, watermelon, whatever suits your family. Let's have fun and smash!
Does my baby even eat the smash cake?
It totally depends! I have seen some babies touch the cake once and never go back for another touch or bite. While others dive right in and eat it like they have never had a meal before. Every baby reacts differently to textures, the environment around them if it is unfamiliar to them, and the day in general. Whatever way it goes it is completely fine and we will still capture beautiful photos to remember the day.
Where should the photoshoot take place?
Most of my smash cake photo shoots happen in my home studio area located in Redmond Oregon. It gives me enough time to fully set everything up and you can show up with your little one in tow and get straight to the fun. I keep the studio area at a comfortable temperature as well as fully baby proofed and safe. When they are in my studio you as the parent do not have to worry about anything but sitting back and watching the fun.
When weather permits I also offer outdoor locations.
