There’s something so special about maternity sessions. Watching a  mama take a moment to really soak in her pregnancy is one of my favorite things to capture. And as someone who photographs expecting moms regularly, I can tell you this: the details matter.

That’s why I wanted to share some helpful advice, not just from me, but from a fellow maternity photographer,  Aayah Photography. They was kind enough to share a few of her go-to tips (and they just so happen to be some of my favorites too). So whether you’re planning your first maternity session or helping a friend get ready for hers, here are some do’s and don’ts we both agree will make a big difference.

Tips from Aayah Photography (That I 100% Agree With)

  • DO: Try to schedule your session around golden hour

“The soft, warm light brings a beautiful, flattering glow that works especially well for maternity portraits.”

Golden hour is my favorite time to shoot. It’s dreamy lighting right before sunset softens everything and gives that warm, glowy feel that makes photoshoots stand out and look even more beautiful.

  • DO: Go for flowy dresses in natural colors

“Flowy dresses in natural tones really complement the outdoor vibe.”

I always recommend this to my clients too. Neutral tones like cream, soft pink, olive, or beige photograph beautifully outdoors, and flowy fabrics add that little bit of magic to your photos, especially when that Central Oregon  breeze picks up.

  • DON’T: Pick a crowded or chaotic location

“Avoid overly busy backgrounds or crowded locations. Maternity sessions should feel peaceful and focused.”

We’re both all about calm, clean backgrounds. I always scout out open fields, tall grasses, or quiet tree-lined spots for that exact reason. The last thing you want is to feel rushed or distracted during your session.

A Few of My Own Go-To Tips

  • DO: Plan your session for 26–34 weeks
  • This is usually the sweet spot. Your bump is nice and round, but you’re still feeling comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the experience.

  • DO: Bring something meaningful if you’d like
  • A little pair of baby shoes or your ultrasound photo are small personal touches that make your session even more special.

  • DO: Include your partner or kiddos
  • This season of life is about so much more than just your bump. If you want to bring your partner or older children, I say go for it. Some of my favorite photos come from those family connections. Plus I always make sure to take a couple moments to get mama only.

A Few Things to Avoid

  • DON’T: Stress about perfect posing
  • Please don’t worry about what to do with your hands or how to stand, I’ll guide you through it all.

  • DON’T: Worry if things don’t go exactly as planned
  • Sometimes the wind picks up, the weather shifts, or your toddler decides to sprint in circles. It’s okay. I roll with it, and often those little surprises lead to the most memorable shots.

  • DON’T: Forget about shoes!
  • If we’re shooting outdoors, you’ll want something comfy that you can walk in. And if you’re up for it, I always love some barefoot photos once we’re settled into a spot.

I'm so thankful to Aayah Photography for sharing her thoughts on how to make a maternity photoshoot feel smooth and stress-free from the moment you start planning. I hope that between her tips and mine, you’re feeling a little more confident—and maybe even excited—to start dreaming up your own session.
