When you first start searching for a newborn photographer, your eyes are naturally drawn to the beautiful, sleepy poses and the tiny, curled-up toes. It’s magic to see. But as a parent-to-be, there is often the question in the back of your mind: “How do they get the baby to do that, and is it actually safe?

Choosing a photographer isn't just about an art style you love, it’s about finding a professional who prioritizes your baby’s safety and your own peace of mind. Here is a look behind the curtain at what a safe, stress-free studio newborn session looks like in my Central Oregon studio.

Safety as a standard

The truth about trend posing

Many of those iconic newborn images you see on Pinterest, like the "froggie pose" where a baby appears to be resting their chin on their hands are not quite what they seem. In a professional studio, these are created as composites, meaning a hand is supporting the baby at all times and edited out later.

However, in my Bend studio, I take safety a step further. I choose not to perform certain high-risk poses, including the "froggie pose," even as a composite. While these images are incredibly popular, I believe that no "trendy" pose is worth even the smallest compromise in your newborn’s safety or comfort. My philosophy is built on natural posing and gentle movements. This ensures your baby is never stressed or forced into an unnatural pose. The result? Timeless, beautiful portraits that capture your baby exactly as they are, without ever putting their safety in jeopardy.

The "Baby-Led" Philosophy

Awake or Asleep

Every baby is unique. Some arrive at the studio ready for a long nap, while others are wide awake and curious about their new surroundings. My sessions are entirely baby-led, regardless of whether your little one is eyes-open or eyes-closed.

If a baby is awake and content, we capture those beautiful, alert expressions and tiny soulful stares. If they are ready to drift off, we transition into those peaceful, tucked-in moments. By following your newborn’s lead we ensure the session is never a struggle. This patience is what differentiates a specialist in Central Oregon from a general photographer. We aren't just taking pictures, we are respecting your baby’s comfort in every state.

A Space Built for Your Newborn

I’ve set up my studio to feel as much like the womb as possible so your baby feels right at home.

Keeping it Warm: I keep my studio at a steady 72-80°F so your baby stays warm and happy even when they aren't fully dressed.

Soothing Sounds: I use white noise to help babies stay comfortable and sleepy during your session.

Clean and Fresh: I know how much you’re thinking about germs right now. I wash every single wrap, blanket, and prop myself with baby-safe detergent after every session. If your baby touches it, it’s been cleaned by me.

Your Only Job is to Relax

The first few weeks with a newborn are a total blur. You’re likely exhausted, and your house might feel like a disaster zone. When you come to see me, I want you to leave all of that at the door.

You don’t have to clean your house for me or worry about the light in your nursery. I have everything we need right here. Your only "job" is to sit on the couch, have a snack, and finally drink a hot cup of coffee while I take care of the soothing and swaddling. For a lot of the local Bend parents I work with, this is the first hour of peace they’ve had since the hospital!

Final Thoughts: The Images That Truly Matter

When you look back at your newborn photos five, ten, or fifteen years from now, you won't care about whether your baby was posed in the latest trend.

What you will care about is seeing how incredibly tiny they were. You’ll want to remember the exact shape of their little fingernails, the way their lips naturally parted when they slept, and the peace that filled the room.

Choosing a baby-led, safety-first experience means choosing to preserve your baby exactly as they are. Natural, comfortably, and safely. These weeks pass by in a beautiful, exhausting blur. Let’s capture them with the gentleness and respect your new little miracle deserves.
